I found a poem that I think best expresses how the people of Umuofia felt when they heard Okonkwo committed suicide. In my opinion, when Okonkwo killed himself, I think many people who looked up to him felt as if they lost a hero. In fact, even Obierika stated that a great man was lost (in the scene where he asked the District Comissiooner's men to cut down Okonkwo). In this poem, I believe the feelings of all of the people in the village as well as the loss of hope when the news spread about Konkwo is expressed in this poem. What do you think?
When Ure Hero Falls
By: Tupac Shakur
when your hero falls from grace
all fairy tales r uncovered
myths exposed and pain magnified
the greatest pain discovered
u taught me 2 be strongbut im confused 2 c u so weak
u said never 2 give up
and it hurts 2 c u welcome defeat
when ure hero falls so do the stars
and so does the perception of tomorrow
without my hero there is only
me alone 2 deal with my sorrow
your heart ceases 2 work
and your soul is not happy at all
what r u expected 2 do
when ure only hero falls

wow! i totally agree, this poem sets the exact mood for how those people who looked up to Okonkwo felt after his suicide! the poem was well chosen and fits prefectly. it was very touching, and at the same time brought a clear understanding of how one man is a big influence to society!
